I stopped by a local gun store today to grab some personal defense and target rounds for my Glock 23. While I was there I inquired about their CCW classes because I plan on taking the course in about a month. They handed me this “application” and a business card.

Kinja'd!!!

I got home and took a closer look at the application and business card. The business card was for a lawyers office. Apparently this store makes you fill out the application and send it to a lawyer along with a copy of your driver’s license. Why would a gun store/lawyer want or need to collect this information?

In all my years of shooting, owning guns and having multiple friends and family members with their CCW, I’ve never seen something like this. Any ideas? It seems a bit sketchy so I’m most likely going to take my CCW class somewhere else where they don’t require all this stuff.

Here’s a picture of my Glock for your time haha

The only part of that I remember doing is that list, and the thing about the ammo. The problem I’m having is with the state. I sent them my application(which the instructor reviewed, and okayed), my test results, my shooting results, and a $50 money order over a month ago, and I haven’t heard back.

I bet if you look up your state CCW requirements that checklist aligns with them line by line. I’ve seen stuff like it before and wouldn’t worry about it if you check the law and it matches.

As for the lawyer it’s probably a dude who has a relationship with the sheriff or courthouse or whoever has to approve it in your state. It’s just greasing the skids (you pony up a few extra bucks and your chance of a BS denial goes down opposed to self filing). Maybe worth it maybe not.

Looks like it is probably for insurance and liability purposes. At least they’re not asking for your social security number LOL.

If you don’t feel right about it, then find someone else.

I think it’s because you could get some nutcase with priors who could end up seriously injuring someone.

Come to Indiana, you Paulo your money and you wait. However it is not good in all states, 31 if I recall.

I have my CCW in Wisconsin, didn’t have to take a CCW class, as I had taken hunter safety 15 or so years ago (apparently that is good enough).

I suspect your dealer is offering the classes and trying extra hard to cover their own ass, or the Lawyer runs the classes and wants to cover his ass. Personally, I’d look elsewhere, there’s no reason they need to be referring you to a lawyer right out of the gate, or need to collect that info just to sign up for a class.

It looks like http://www.missouricarry.com/ has a directory of trainers, they might help you find someone you are more comfortable with.

Picture of my carry for your time.

Nothing wrong on that form, but if you are not comfortable, there must be dozens of classes available elsewhere.

If you get a CCW and want to carry - heck, even if you own a gun for self defense in a house or a car or a business - pay $11 per month to Law Shield or similar. If you ever get in trouble, expect a $20k retainer and $400+ per hour for a competent lawyer. Law Shield covers all expenses.

Disclaimer - I just went to one of their seminars - my wife is an attorney and avid constitution defender and she presented. We both have CCW licenses and we both signed up for a year of Law Shield.

What state?

I have my CC in Iowa. I had a similar form but the Lawyer was part owner so we covered two bases.

Oddly Illinois doesn’t reciprocate with Iowa on CC so I cannot carry right now.

Ya it’s kind of weird how they have it structured. I know a bunch of places that offer the classes but looked here first purely out of convenience. I’m going to go with the shop where one of my buddies works. Great classes with none of the bullshit.

That’s a great little handgun! How do you like it?

Haha that would be nuts. It’s the name of the shop, Razorback Armory.

That’s definitely unusual for Missouri. I live in MO, have a ccw, know a couple trainers and I’ve never seen that.

I’d go somewhere else. You can take the class just about anywhere

Huh, never heard of Law Shield before but I’ll look into it! I do carry my handgun in my car because work has me going all over and I go to school in a really bad area.

And for the record, I don’t have a problem with the application seeing as how I’m not a criminal, but it’s weird that a lawyer, whom is not my own, would need all this info haha

I don’t know, I’ve never heard of a gun shop that offers CCW classes making people fill out forms like this. Neither my brother nor my mom had to do something like that when they took their classes and that’s why I’m kinda weirded out by it. Nobody, besides my own lawyer should need all that info, ya know?

Usually the state has to get back to you within a certain time frame, either approving or denying your application. I know for Missouri it can take up to 45ish days. My brother got approved in a little less than a week and my mom took about two. Im not sure how long you’d have to wait in SC. Hopefully they approve you soon!

Could be. And I’ve decided to take the class through a gun shop where one of my friends works. It’s inconvenient but he can get me a discount and I don’t have to fill out weird lawyer paperwork just to take the class!

Yep yep. My brother and mom have their CCW and they both said if was really weird. I’ve already found another place to take the class, I just have to find a date to take it now!

A number of states have attestation requirements. My guess is this is how that shop decided to handle that, that way when you finish all the paperwork is filed for you. I’m sure you can complete a class elsewhere and self file attaching the completion paperwork yourself if you’re not cool with handing out the info. I don’t see a big issue either way and self filing is likely less out of pocket.

Someone with a record could take the class but they’d never be approved by the state to actually carry.

Haha I could actually open carry outside my city’s limits. Only done it once before and that was at a friend’s farm and in a veeeerrrry small town. It was weird and I’ll never do it again.

The CW9 carries really well. Less than 1" thick and very light. It has no safeties which I really like, the trigger pull is long like a revolver and buttery smooth. Cycles carry loads of Hornady Critical duty just fine and eats up steel cased Wolf at the range too.

I did have to send it back to Khar though for service as the trigger stopped breaking. The picked up the shipping both ways and fixed it for free.

As for holsters, I usually use a Foxx Trapp holster, its all kydex and very thin. I also have a crossbreed style holster which I found to be comfortable, but I spend a lot of time in and out of gun free zones and it is a pain to remove from the waistband and then put back. The Trapp slips in and outof the waisband really easily.
